Apple TV 2 & XBMC Resources

I wanted to provide some resources, tutorials and links for those people who want to jailbreak a second generation apple tv (running 4.4.4 or lower) and install XBMC on it.

This solution has provided my family and me almost all our media entertainment for the last year at 1/4 the price of cable.

I may add additional information as I get feedback in order to give more details as people ask.

  • Using seasonpass to jailbreak atv2 (good tutorial with links to all you need are on the Firecore site) http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605
  • You may also decide to use ATV (black) from fire core, which costs about $15-30, but you don’t have to. It makes it uber-simple to install, but you can just ssh into your ATV to install the components you want- requires a bit more knowledge of terminal commands, but there are tutorials for that as well (see below)
  • Installing/configuring XBMC tutorial http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=XBMC_Online_Manual
  • iOS support for XBMC at the XBMC Forum http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=137

Please look for me on the forums as well using the name: fritzboyle and I can help with issues or point you in the right direction for solutions.

Untethered Apple TV 4.4.4 Jailbreak Released

Right on the heels of the XBMC 11 Eden beta release, we got the new untethered jailbreak for SeasonPass.

Much of the work was done by @pod2g to make this new version possible.

What’s new in AppleTV 4.4.4?

  • AirPlay Mirroring: Now with video mirroring – wirelessly stream what’s on your iPad 2 screen to your HDTV.
  • Photo Stream: View photos recently taken on your iOS device and pushed to your Photo Stream in iCloud.
  • Trailers: A whole new way to browse and view hundreds of the latest theatrical trailers.
  • National Hockey League: Watch live games. View highlights, scores, and more.
  • Wall Street Journal Live: Watch up-to-date news, business commentary, and financial analysis from leading experts.
  • Audio output: Addresses an issue in which audio may not play through the optical port when the TV is turned off.
  • Netflix: Added support for Netflix in Mexico and Latin America.
  • Stability and performance: version 4.4.4 includes general performance and stability improvements, including a fix for an issue that displayed an error when playing some video content.

It should be noted that if you’re already running a tethered version of 4.4.4 you will need to re-jailbreak using Seas0nPass to take advantage of the new untethered version.

Which plugins are supported on 4.4.4?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • Last.fm (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Overflow (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (works)
  • Plex (not working)

As always, Seas0nPass is available as a free download from Seas0nPass.com. If you already have SeasonPass, the software will notify you of the update automatically.

XBMC 11 Beta Released

I’ve been jailbreaking my Apple TV2 essentially from the day I got it. My family and I use two main features on it:

Netflix streaming and XBMC.

If you are not familiar with it, this add-on available either as an install via zip or using the ATV Flash (Black) makes your Apple TV into a streaming powerhouse that allows you to access nearly all television content like a DVR. XBMC works on nearly any OS and has been in development for years.

The beta version of XBMC 11 has now been released. Version 11 “Eden” adds lots of new features and improvements to the open source home theater software for both Mac and Windows. See more after the break Continue reading

Apple TV iOS 5 Jailbreak In the Works

I am always amazed at the effort and skill that hackers show whenever there is a new update.

The most recent update on the firecore site states that they already have a tethered jailbreak and are working out other kinks.

This likely means that a full working jailbreak will arrive in the next month or so.

I went ahead and accepted the OTA update to my Apple TV2 when it came out (it is iOS 4.4 on the ATV2, the numbers are still not in sync with the software numbers for Apple phones and tablets).

Wanted to see all the new features. I must say, they were impressive. I liked the Wall Street Journal feed, as well as the the new hockey Feed.

Mirroring from the iPad and other iOS devices will be great for gaming and sharing video and pictures with the family and I really liked the new photo streaming and screensaver options.

All that being said, I have really come to rely on the jailbreak and my XBMC for a great deal of our video entertainment since cutting our cable.

So after playing with the new iOS for a few hours, I re-jailbroke the ATV. This required reverting back to iOS 4.3.

I look forward to having the best of the new Apple software in conjuntion with my hacked add-ons. I am willing to wait a little longer.
