Apple TV 2 & XBMC Resources

I wanted to provide some resources, tutorials and links for those people who want to jailbreak a second generation apple tv (running 4.4.4 or lower) and install XBMC on it.

This solution has provided my family and me almost all our media entertainment for the last year at 1/4 the price of cable.

I may add additional information as I get feedback in order to give more details as people ask.

  • Using seasonpass to jailbreak atv2 (good tutorial with links to all you need are on the Firecore site) http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605
  • You may also decide to use ATV (black) from fire core, which costs about $15-30, but you don’t have to. It makes it uber-simple to install, but you can just ssh into your ATV to install the components you want- requires a bit more knowledge of terminal commands, but there are tutorials for that as well (see below)
  • Installing/configuring XBMC tutorial http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=XBMC_Online_Manual
  • iOS support for XBMC at the XBMC Forum http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=137

Please look for me on the forums as well using the name: fritzboyle and I can help with issues or point you in the right direction for solutions.

iOS5 AirPlay Mirror Gaming

There are many things about the new iOS5 that will be exciting. One is the improved Airplay experience.

The gaming experience takes it a step further by not just mirroring what is on the iPad onto the screen, but also creating two separate screens, each with its own use and feedback.

Apple TV Software Update

Seems there is going to be some great competition between the video providers this summer. This is good news for those who are trying to cut the cable and access home entertainment via other set top boxes.

Today’s release from Apple allows you to stream television episodes directly to your ATV2 as well as purchase (not just rent) those episodes directly from the ATV.

Additionally, the update provides a Vimeo menu and supports YouTube Playlists.

Now, for those who have jailbroken your ATV, we will need to get an update not OTA to handle these new capabilities…I’m not worried, I’m sure we will get something soon.

Jailbreaking My Apple TV 2Gen

What I thought was going to be a fairly straightforward task has turned out to be a comedy of errors and alot of frustration.

I have tried using Greenpois0n RC6, pwnage, & seas0nPass. I had issues with all of them and never got farther than a tethered boot with seas0nPass that gave me a blank screen. I was able to restore the ATV2 to factory settings so that is good. Continue reading
